The entrance to the caves is narrow, a manmade tunnel that gives the feeling of walking through an ever expanding coffin. The natural formations soon take over—curves of muddy rock with swirling color, knobby stalagmites like calcified lamps and broomsticks in a forgotten attic. As the cave opens up, stalactites hang high over our heads. These are small, the guide says, because most of the formations here were destroyed last time the river flooded. But in the next, larger chamber, they are large enough to threaten. I think of dragon teeth. Every centimeter of mineral formation takes 150 years to collect. The guide turns off the lights to show us what the cave is like in pitch darkness. The explorers who discovered the cave would have had only a small candlelight on their helmet, she says. When the lights go out, the blackness wraps around me, holds me in a velvet so heavy I feel myself sink. Nothing has ever felt so complete but this absence of light. I think, this is reason enough to come here. To experience this totality of one thing, this sense of nothingness, of being small small small. One step, a drop into the void. Forget the step—you’ve already become just a lump of the darkness, but then, this means you are allness too. After the guide turns the lights back on, we enter the canyon chamber. How can this vastness be contained underground? I am smaller than grit in an oystershell, smaller, somehow, than the nothing I was minutes ago in the cave’s dark. The river is too loud to allow for chatter, and I lean over the edge of the railing, watch the water surge and carve its way to the sea. And to stand in between the relentless roar far below and the crowned ceiling so high above is to accept that my little life is but one drop of water nudging at the rocky floor. If I am lucky, I make a mark with the others that come before and after. If I am lucky, we account for a single centimeter one day. 😊 I love the shapes Douglas Firs make against the sky. Particularly if it’s overcast with wisps of clouds being driven fast by wind and they dance. I once read a description of cloudy skies as oystershell. It so perfectly encapsulates our cloudy skies.

We had 'Dig for the Days' on Tuesday, who excavated sondages through a colluvial deposit which contained Saxon pottery, bone and oystershell.

We also have BERTs (Basic Excavation & Recording Techniques) who started their own sondage into a different colluvium and found large animal bone.
The 'Dig for the Days' working hard on finding early medieval artefacts from a thick layer of hill wash. The BERTs' sondage, with a large bone just under the surface.
