The Tape Restorator: www.paradisec.org.au/blog/2025/01...

I'm incredibly fond of this lil tape robot built for PARADISEC. Something wonderfully 1970s technofuture about it.

So much language documentation still languishing on tape, we're entering a critical period for preserving these materials.
The Tape Restorator
We wrote about dried out cassette tapes in an earlier blog post, and the problem they create for playback, screeching as they try to move through the playback machine’s mechanism and ultimate…

I don't like talking about 'saving' languages, but I'm really excited we have saved these recordings of Yolmo: <a href="http://www.superlinguo.com/post/129736479641/when-i-was-in-nepal-in-december-i-was-given-20" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-link="bsky">http://www.superlinguo.com/post/129736479641/when-i-was-in-nepal-in-december-i-was-given-20 (L)
Yolmo speakers - AH1-014 -B
When I was in Nepal in December I was given 20 cassette of Yolmo recordings from the 1970s and 1980s. These recordings were made by Anne Marie Hari, who worked on the Yolmo language in the Melamchi and Helambu area for over 20 years, and included wordlists, songs stories and conversations. They were being held by SIL, who were looking for a way to digitise them. Thanks to Paradisec these cassettes have now been made into a high-quality digital archive, which we are leaving open for the time being. These are probably the earliest known recordings of Yolmo language, and they’re in a very good state. It’s amazing to hear Anne Marie talking with people (and her Yolmo is far better than mine!). I’m hoping to find out more information about the recordings, and eventually have then transcribed and translated.
