Parasite (4/5) - You can’t help but be riveted during, oh, the first 100 min. Sure, the social commentary’s heavy-handed, but the set-up is delicious and the characters compelling. Eventually, though, you realize the plot’s conflict can’t possibly be resolved—and it isn’t. #pff28

The Twentieth Century (3/5) - Somehow just campy enough to keep me awake at 11:30 PM on a weeknight. The über-Canadian-ness and deep-seated perversion sure helped. #pff28

Cunningham (5/5) - It’s hard to imagine a better pairing for 3D technology than modern dance. And it’s harder to imagine a more thoughtful look at genius Merce Cunningham and his work. Highly, highly recommended! #pff28

And Then We Danced (4/5) - I’m never one to resist a sweet, sophisticated gay coming-of-age film, y’know. But add in stellar Georgian music—and some ABBA, too!—and, well, I’m downright moved. Touching, poignant. Levan Gelbakhiani is stunning in the lead role. #pff28

Deerskin (4/5) - Jean Dujardin shines in this minimalistic gem, admirably and quietly committed to its off-off-off-kilter plot. Is it a commentary on masculinity? I doubt it. I’m willing to accept that it’s really about the coolest jacket ever. #pff28

Varda by Agnès (4/5) - Would it be rude to say that a retrospective of a rich, full creative life was . . . over-long? #pff28

Synonyms (4/5) - Too often disjointed and perplexing, Synonyms is nevertheless a gorgeous rumination on things like: what it means to be Western, whether it's possible to shed a hated identity, and the lasting effects of living amidst militarism. Recommended. #pff28

Divine Love (2/5) - What had been an engaging, concrete send-up of a near-future über-pro-family Brazil is downright betrayed by the arrival of a plot point better suited to some woo-woo world. Sigh. Good acting, smart production values. #pff28

Dogs Don’t Wear Pants (3/5) - Juha’s road through grief required a dominatrix? Erm, ok. But did I have to see that much blood? (Thank goodness for grim humor.) #pff28

Temblores (2/5) - Some real Well of Loneliness ish, Guatemalan-style. #pff28

Slay the Dragon (4/5) - Competent, generally smart take on the movement to put redistricting in the hands of citizens. #pff28
