#MathsToday Implications & quantifiers in Discrete. Drawing truth sets and using those to think about implications went well, but I didn't stick the landing on connecting to contrapositive. We'll come back to it.

Good start on quantifiers (using an activity from a POGIL colleague), more on Thurs!

#MathsToday Permutations in Discrete with a new POGIL activity from a colleague. Students gave useful feedback! Solid foundation; will need more practice.

My colleague Gerry Higdon gave his 1st in a series of 6 seminars this year. Lots of excellent sequences and series! I'm excited for the rest.

Fantastic idea! One organization I'm part of (The POGIL Project) intentionally brings K12 and higher ed folks together and I've learned so much from K12 colleagues.

Providers face challenges getting ECMO management skills due to low patient volume & lack of standardized training. These @cuanschutz.bsky.social @childrenscolo.bsky.social case-based sessions use the POGIL format to evaluate impact. #MedEd #MedSky

Submissions received by 2 March will receive priority consideration. This is from the POGIL Project, but no previous POGIL experience necessary. Priority consideration to biology, A&P, math, CS, or chemistry. #chemsky

Yeah, I’m doing active learning (POGIL) - a persistent feedback is how some students prefer passivity (I didn’t say *passive learning* as I’m suspect about the learning part).

A kind paternalism for better learning seems better than the smug paternalism of ‘we’ve always done it that way’.

#MathsToday: cryptography in ProbStat I (testing an activity for a POGIL colleague!) and the math of survival analysis in Advanced Stats. Only final presentations next week left in those two courses!

POGIL is a strategy to limit this by assigning roles
November 10, 2025 at 9:12 PM
Run group problem solving as POGIL sessions with groups of four and each having an assigned role. That way he cannot dominate. Assign him as the analyst

@craftytechwiz.bsky.social discussing how POGIL involves setting up a framework for students to come to understanding on their own rather than explicitly giving them answers. Emphasis is not on correct answers the first time.

POGIL involves carefully constructed groups where different students fulfill different roles like

reference guide, manager, quality control, timekeeper, speaker

I'm #DHMakes -ing while listening, and these are such great talks! Loving the focus on documentation from @jenniferisasi.bsky.social and excited to learn about POGIL from @craftytechwiz.bsky.social!

Next up is @craftytechwiz.bsky.social talking about POGIL (process oriented guided inquiry learning) from the standpoint of non-instructional staff person

CHED ExComm approved almost $100K in CHED member scholarships for #BCCE2026. & while our role is often fiduciary, the ability to give back to CHED (via webinars (POGIL, Early Career Chemists, etc) or communication & solidarity in hard times or scholarships) is a breath of fresh air. #ACSFall2025

Ok - I’m intrigued. We don’t have set recitations anymore but I’m trying to find better uses of class time now that I’ve flipped my lecture. I’ve used lots of pogil material, but never been trained and terrible at leading group work.

Many thanks to Prof. Melissa Reeves for training me, my learning assistants, my colleague Prof. Sarah Bergeron, and my fellow instructors from the Bio and Math Departments last Friday! My LAs and I are beyond excited to implement #POGIL in our General Chemistry classes next semester and beyond!

Yes! I have group roles assigned according to seat numbers in the group and rotate them daily. I use POGIL group roles and it works well! Roles are well defined and we spend a lesson learning about them. I also use partner report cards as a peer evaluation. #sunchat
