Book Review: 1491 by Charles C. Mann

Charles Mann's case that pre-Columbian America was populous and engineered — and its 'pristine wilderness' a post-plague landscape — rewrites the hemisphere's history.

Also want to recommend a few of my favorite books on pre-Colombian American history: Fifth Sun by Camilla Townsend, Native Foods by Michael D. Wise, & recently recommended to me by a friend, 1491 by Charles Mann.
As a descendent of European colonizers and also as a person who is very into etymology, I feel like there is a big gap in my knowledge concerning the names of the place where I live…. I think for indigenous people’s day I’m gonna try to learn a bit of Wampanoag etymology

It's an interesting hypothetical. It's a bit dated, but you can check out 1491 if you want a survey of what Native polities looked like pre-contact.

One of Pope Leo's predecessors is the reason Stollen even exists...

In 1491, a papal decree by Pope Innocent VIII permitted Dresdenders to use butter in their pre-Christmas baking, thus transforming a simple fasting pastry into the buttery Christmas delicacy enjoyed today.

I swear to you, for some reason I initially read this as 1491, as if it were some kind of pre-Columbian breakfast hack from Pillsbury 😅

A book I found very enlightening and informative was "1491", (Charles Mann) speaks to what existed in the pre-Columbian times before colonialism, disease and racism hit the shores of North, Central and South America.

1491 was great for rethinking assumptions about the Americas pre-European contact and colonization. But the speed with which highly sophisticated, truly globalized commercial networks emerged in the 16th century is absolutely astounding.

I guess I should have said either pre-1492 *or* just 1491 but instead I just...didn't do that. And that's OK.

Robert what do you think the chances are that people will return to a more or less pre-1491 Americas lifestyle? Some farming, some hunting and gathering, some cities, some nomadery?

Like obviously living through the transition would suck and most folks would die, but I mean after that?

I still think about things I learned from 1491 by Charles C. Mann, which colored in a lot of pre-Columbian American history for me.

I have family from Northern Ireland and Patrick Radden Keefe's Say Nothing helped contextualize The Troubles for me in a really engaging way

Have you read the book 1491? If yes what did you think of perhaps the most controversial sections- huge cultivated gardens in Amazonia, & the passenger pigeon NOT being very common pre 1492? #conservation #conservationphilosophy #conservationagriculture @ruminatus @MurphyWestwood
