Karlsruhe is a good example of what's typical in continental Europe. The tunnel (in yellow, type A-1 ROW) has PZB, which is the German equivalent of Positive Train Control. The rest is line-of-sight manual operations

On that note, many german Stadtbahnen would use LZB instead of PZB. It offers a much greater capacity, hence why it was installed, however it is on its way out and is being replaced by other systems (including PZB) due to high costs and complexity.

The tram-train sections use different approaches. In the former interurban alignement (black) they use lines-of-sight when permissible speed < 70 km/h as per BOStrab regulations, then use train-like tram signaling in the segment at 80 km/h (grey), then rail-type PZB in the mainline rail segment.

a) Sicherheitssysteme (aka PZB) haben, die den Zug dann zum Halten bringen und
b) Streckenkunde haben, damit wir auch bei schlechter Sicht wissen, wo sich die Signale befinden, unabhängig davon ob sie leuchten oder nicht
