Seen on Wednesday on a fine warm spring day ☀️ Trees in Padley Gorge are twisted, gnarled, and stunted due to a combination of harsh environmental conditions, thin, rocky soil, and historical management techniques like coppicing and pollarding. These ancient oak and birch trees grow slowly over hundreds of years, adapting to the exposed, windy environment by growing in irregular, dramatic shapes.
