15 minute apples! Done in oil paint in ~3"x3" squares. Super fun exercise and a great palette cleanser when you're feeling stuck. Paint Coach talks about it in this video: m.youtube.com/watch?v=pLiA...

First cloud I ever painted. 4" x 5.5". Done last month. From Paint Coach's video on clouds. The key is in the short paint strokes to achieve that "formless" cloud look!

It's been one year now of oil painting. This was my first self-guided painting, from Paint Coach's "A Simple Beginners Guide To Oil Painting"
I've done at least one oil painting per week for the last 52 weeks! Here's to 52 more!

First Practice Piece.

@paintcoach

Supposed to be aiming at defining values.

Notes. Build confidence in brush strokes. Don't be afraid to mix more paint. I feel like I thinned out the paint too much in places.

Tips/ Pointers Welcome!

Day 5

After spending a day working on #paintcoach videos and reading color/ palette theory, I decided to try my first landscape. I took a picture of the Superstitions behind my house after work, and just tried to get a solid representation with 1, 3/4" flat brush.

Today, I didnt watch much of The Basics of Drawing for Oil Painting video. Instead I actually viewed my subject. Yesterday's session found me copying the Coach's painting, rather than looking at the subject I was painting.

Spent some time today doing studies of birch trees. I've never spent time on landscapes, so this is super new to me! Thanks to the channel #PaintCoach on youtube for a great video on this. Go check him out! #trees #art #digitalart

I haven't painted in years but have been really wanting to get back into it. Decided to try oil painting since I'm starting over & want to try something new. Went to YouTube & found the very studly @paintcoach. Watched a lot of his videos. He is just fascinating. He also gives oil painting lessons.

“Back to Basics” September 2024, Digital
I decided to try a 30-brush stroke exercise by PaintCoach and made some stuff I really liked. In the end I got a little carried away and after the initial exercise, decided to dress up a couple of them into proper paintings #DigitalPainting #Art

DAY 8

I've been teaching myself to oil paint. Today is my 8th day painting. I decided to follow the advice of #paintcoach and practice a portrait in mono. I found an old Twitter post of his from 2010. "Cadmium Red Deep."

5 hours in on this piece. (This is the painting assignment for Paint Coach's The Basics of Drawing for Painting online class. He does this painting in 2 and a half hours.) I'm 45 minutes into the process. LOTS OF PAUSING, lol.

Added a little lemon study. Setting up some tutorial paintings for my days off. I'm pretty happy with #PaintCoach as an online option for learning how to paint btw.

Funny #oilpainting story here:

I set up this #shadowbox for #stilllife #painting and, after listening to an episode about drawing/ sketching from life from #paintcoach, I tried to just doodle in the shapes with a brush, vs my normal process of printing it out and using a grid. Not ready for that!

Working on a #paintcoach landscape tutorial. I have completed the SIMPLIFY step of Paint Coach's three step Method, but the house is far too tall. Still trying to do some more practice exercises and paintings, before returning to my own originals.

I struggled w depth perception-(I could never see magic eye images)-in crits people would say my work was on the surface. It was frustrating I finally figured out work arounds. Also struggled w overworking &
detail. Keep going - btw paintcoach on YouTube is a great resource

Today I worked on some landscape studies. I have backed off of my own work to take some stock in my classes, my progress, and where I feel like I need some more fundamental practice.

Details in Alt Txt.

Did some #oilpainting today. First, the three images show the #paintcoach method which is to paint in three main stages. Simplify. Shape. Sharpen. The final image is my final #oilout step on this completed painting.
