#UTP26 is under way with @drclaireharris.bsky.social leading a tour on Ice Age London. Beginning at Embankment and the modern Thames, the banks of which have been remodelled in the historic era. 🦣🏺 #PalaeoLondon

And we can be fairly certain that Palaeolithic people were not in fact preferring Holborn, Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia, Marylebone and Mayfair over Bayswater, Knightsbridge and Paddington. So what has given rise to this mapped distribution pattern? Recent historical geography I assume.🏺🦣

North east London & Essex.
Ice Age geology & Palaeolithic finds.
The former extent of the Anglian Ice Sheet is in blue. The red triangles are our record of 400,000 years of early human occupation in the region. #PalaeoLondon.

It's quite dramatic reading! "The borehole penetrates a 70 metre-thick sequence...revealing a 43 metre-thick zone of
bedrock mélange." #Pingo #PalaeoLondon 1/4

While flying over, take a moment to gaze in wonder at London's Palaeolithic. In deep red is Ground Zero on the Grays Inn Road. Look at the cluster of finds in Hackney, in the City and the West End. #PalaeoLondon #UrbanPrehistory #WiP

London Before London @carolinejuby's PhD thesis, covering Pleistocene London, is such a brilliant work and it's 10 years old this year. Thank you Caroline for all the times I've virtually reached for it over the last few years. #PalaeoLondon...

"The locality is of paramount importance, not only does it contain one of the richest Palaeolithic archaeological assemblages in southern England, but also rich palaeoenvironmental evidence for a relatively poorly-known interglacial" Juby 2011 on Hackney #PalaeoLondon

Your regular reminder that 120,000 years ago Hippos ruled Trafalgar Square and that that #FourPlinth would look great with a statue of one on it. #PalaeoLondon #FossilFriday

The 🟦shows Ice Age deposits, 🔺Palaeolithic finds. Dead centre is John Conyers 1690 Grays Inn Road handaxe, right on the edge of mapped deposits. The lack of known find spots to the east means very little. Just gaps to be tested. 🦣 #PalaeoLondon #Bloomsbury #Clerkenwell

Read the historical find spot data literally and they tell us Neanderthals preferred #Acton to #ShepherdsBush
Until the gaps are tested we can't really say anything. #PalaeoLondon

In pink, one of the oldest (>500,000 years) Ice Age deposits in London: the Stanmore Gravel Formation. Not sure how old it is, if its ancient river or marine in origin. So far no artefacts have been found in it. It caps high hills on the edges of the Thames basin. #PalaeoLondon

Intrigued to hear that Indiana Jones has been filming in Hackney. Is the series going to redeem itself with an Ice Age theme & #PalaeoLondon plot?...

Nearby at Angel Road pit the peaty 'Arctic Beds' don't look detached at all. Right down the Lea Valley to Stratford records of rich organic deposit from the last cold stage have been made. #PalaeoLondon

Up early editing some text for #PalaeoLondon teaching resources. It's a shame we can't confirm any archaeology older than half a million years in the city. It's almost certainly here. 🦣

The pit was owned by the Great Eastern Railway company. It produced remains of woolly mammoth which were preserved & put on display in the board room at Liverpool Street station. The history of railways & early Ice Age science are deeply entangled. #PalaeoLondon🦣🚂

I would love to see a modern section through this. An unscaled photograph, by Sam Hazzledine-Warren, showing detached blocks of ice-rafted peat, the Arctic Beds of the Lea Valley. At Picketts Lock Pit, Ponders End, Enfield.

Working in London today. Thinking about how the Roman city, to the east, was in the landscape of the Hackney Gravels. Early Medieval London, to the west, that of the Lynch Hill Gravels. Two versions of early London, set out on two seperate Ice Age legacies. #PalaeoLondon

Rediscovering the tributaries of the Thames is one thing, but here at Embankment you can look north across the floodplain edge of the Early Medieval actual Thames up to the Ice Age Taplow terrace formed by the river over 125,000 years ago. #PalaeoLondon 1/2
