#Palaeotherium
Brilliant day at Crystal Palace, looking at the models with their new paint jobs and tidied bodies. A lot of great new detail to see.

(Addendum: the sculptures were being illuminated as we left. Sadly @gizz47.bsky.social and I had to bail before the effect was fully realised, but @bobnichollsart.bsky.social's Palaeotherium magnum had already attained a fetching shade of red, and **relocated!!** Xiphodon was a cool magenta.)

Much has been done with the Paleogene mammals. The vaguely camel-like anoplotheres have mostly been repainted. The palaeothere Plagiolophus minor has been repaired and how has a new head, plus the MISSING Palaeotherium magnum has reappeared due to creation of a new model by Bob Nicholls. AND...

Just came across this picture of the Natura Docet museum in Denekamp on someone's blog (www.dimrost.nl/WordPress/i-...). Looks a bit like a Crystal Palace Palaeotherium out the front.

We’ve been back in the Park this afternoon, with FCPD volunteer and project partner Rhys doing some more photogrammetry (3D modelling prep via lots of photographs) of our recently-restored Palaeotherium magnum, and Anoplotherium

Internet here is terrible so mostly having to give up at this point. Currently Ellinor Michel on what's happened to Crystal Palace sculptures after the Witton & Michel book. The Crystal Palace group have bought 3D prints with them :)

I remember seeing Stephen Jay Gould talking about Cuvier and Palaeotherium when I was little, so I read his essays while I rode the bus between college classes. I think I was pretty well-primed by the time I decided to start writing. And yeah that probably contributed to my sense of shut up Richard

But fear not! A replacement has been made:

"The magnificent new sculpture was finally unveiled on the Tertiary island on 2nd July 2023 to a large crowd of Palaeotherium enthusiasts."

Close-ups of each habitat depicted above, with named genera of plants (plus a single speculative animal). It reads almost like a botanical garden of rare conifers. What a magical ecosystem!

Due to the nature of amber, it's not really known whether these all grew at the same area and time or not.

¡One of the mammals once went missing!

The "charmingly dour" palaeotherium magnum wandered off in the 1960s to have its own adventures in south London.

Visited the new Dinosaur in Crystal Palace Park - technically not a dinosaur, Palaeotherium magnum a sort of horsey, made to replace one that vanished in the 1970s. Is probably in the lake with the head of the Danté statue.
