this came up in conversation today: The Pallava script of the Tamil-speaking Pallava dynasty, c. 300-400 AD. The script was exported into Southeast Asia and became scripts as diverse as Thai, Burmese, Balinese, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, etc.

Southern India is full of ancient temples, the inner sanctums often dating back to 1500-2000 years ago (Pallava/Chola Empires). I had the opportunity to visit two yesterday, both deifying Goddess Kamakshi - Kanchipuram (L) and Mangadu (R). Note the gorgeous detail on the often monolithic gopurams.

The gopuram of Thiruvathigai Veerateswarar Temple (Panruti) constructed by King Mahendra Pallava. King Raja Raja Chola I is believed to have stayed in this temple for a long time to study the architecture before building Brihadeeswarar Temple (Thanjavur Periya Kovil).

Kailasanathar temple has calligraphic inscriptions in Pallava Grantha script en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pallava..., shaped into swans, peacocks and ducks. Pallava Grantha is the basis of scripts of many SE Asian languages.

Rivendell as a sanctuary reminds me of the bountiful Śrīksetra Garden, described in the 7th-century Talang Tuo inscription of Sriwijaya kingdom in Sumatra. The king, Sri Jayanasa, established the garden as a sanctuary and for the "well-being of all creatures." 1/4
