Every Latine intellectual eventually converges upon two dry thoughts: "the United States is a Latin American country," and "Panamericanism would be a cool idea, shame about all the justifiably touchy reasons we all prefer to have different states instead."

See, that too is completely incomprehensible to anyone out of the loop of panAmericanism. If I hadn’t been for a homestay in New Zealand, I wouldn’t even have known that “Aotearoa” is New Zealand in Māori either, and I wouldn’t have questioned it either.

Eh, I find they misread the creative process too much and decontextualize wartime panamericanism to force it through a funnel of post-Truman Cold War thinking.

Do you know *why* this stopped happening? Because of the United States! Something as simple as looking up "panamericanism" would dispel the illusion that America has ever been a purely US term. It is not. It was appropriated, and taken away from Latin America based on supremacist notions.

Notice here the problem isn't "ooh this is inaccurately used". Its the idea of inferiority, which is repeatedly pinned on Latin America by american cultural production.
When America as a term had the notion of equality, the days of panamericanism, they proudly said: "we want to be American".

I encourage people to stop calling it "America." It is the United States OF America (the "US"). There are multiple Americas, and they should all be one. Pan-Americanism!
