You're right, the origin of "butch" (as both noun and adj) is Polari, sailor's slang picked up by British gay men in the early 20th century. Butch is a pancommunity term and has been for the entirety of its existence.

"Butch queen" and "Butch" as in "masc gay man", "cis-passingly masculine" or "hypermasc drag" originated in the ballroom scene and continues to exist in cis gay men's culture today.
