I again am reminded me of the many asylum applications I’ve filed where asylum-seekers have explained how loose networks of parastate thugs are used to enforce regime policy and terrorize people. I swear they are getting ideas from 589s, down to the unmarked white trucks and balaclavas.

They've done really well weakening the system with parastate violence and threats forcing out county and town level election officials in various places since 2016.

Taking modern conservative as MAGA, which has at it's heart xenophobia, patriarchal hierarchy, and the vicious wielding of state and parastate power to distinguish it from the Reagan/Bush era conservatism, I'd say the pop cultural hit that nailed it, and importantly nailed the aesthetic, is 300.

If we leave aside the outdated models that dominate this discussion and look at the form civil war has mostly taken in our era (i.e. low-intensity conflict), civil war's been here for ages.
