For precarious academics, publication is central to our professional survival: to have any hope of securing a job, even a casualized role, we must demonstrate our ability to produce scholarship. And not just any scholarship at that. Our research must be world-class, pioneering, paradigmshifting simply to survive the first sift of CVs. The worse our working conditions are, the higher quality our outputs must be. But playing by the institution’s rules, obeying their mandates, even “excelling” on their terms, is no longer enough to stay employed. Birkbeck, University of London triumphed in REF 2021, for example. An exultant press release, published in May 2022, noted that more than 80% of the institution’s research output was determined to be “‘world-leading’ (4✶) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3✶),” with English Language and Literature, housed in the Department of English, Theatre and Creative Writing (ETC), “ranked second nationally.” Six months later, “on the eve of [its] 200th anniversary,” Birkbeck announced the prospect of up to 140 job losses, shedding up to a quarter of total academic staff—including targeting a 50% reduction of academics in the REF-lauded ETC—and half of all administrative staff. There is no time to rest on even “world-leading” laurels.
