Obviously there’s big class/income differences there, but people my age acting like better-off millennials *weren’t* often aggressively helicopter parented crack me up
I’m a median-age millennial and I vividly recall being one of the only kids in multiple neighborhoods across the U.S. (we moved a lot) who was allowed to go places/play outside unsupervised, in the 90s/2000s.
It’s weird when people my age act like we grew up in a free range culture: we didn’t!

There’s a famous illustration of how four generations lost the right to roam, covering 1926 to 2007. Even with the rise of radio, TV and video games it seems kinda hard to blame too much time on screens or even social media — a thing that didn’t exist for kids until very recently — for the change.

Ok getting two kittens when you have two children under 6 is literally the best idea I’ve ever had. The four of them just play for hours, get tired and fall asleep. I’ve barely parented in two days.

people have been parented by household staff/slaves/servant since basically the invention of hierarchy, and the result is that you get an emotionally mutilated child unable to differentiate between power relations and human connection, but keenly aware of an aching absence they can't address.
