Man it'd be nice to still have Dennett and Parfit as AI eats the world and there are top level political fights about effective altruism.

The works of Derek Parfit (1942-2017) have had a profound influence on how philosophers understand rational decision-making, ethics, and personal identity. www.philosophytalk.org/shows/derek-... #Parfit #philosophy #philsky

This review of the biography of Derek Parfit, entitled Parfit: A Philosopher and His Mission to Save Morality is so intriguing. It begins with a very disquieting anecdote from the philosopher's life, and goes on to consider the consequences of truly living your philosophy.
Nothing Personal
Was this man Parfit some kind of sociopath?

I'm very fond of this paragraph from Parfit. In general, I appreciate the intense and unusual sincerity of his writing.

Derek Parfit v Bernard Williams (sorry, I’m team Williams)
I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and it’s both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.

Regardless of how you feel about this argument, Parfit is a joy. (He does have a rebuttal)

I think this only applies to analytic philosophy. Continental philosophy integrates ideas from art, history, and literature, and even from analytic philosophy (cf. Ricoeur’s program for a new virtue ethics in “Oneself As Another,” where he engages critically with Anscombe, Davidson, and Parfit).

Little known fact: Derek Parfit had an urbanist phase.

Like Parfit does this too but at least Parfit, it's my impression, is basically saying "HERE IS EVERYTHING I WAS THINKING ABOUT FOR 25 YEARS" whereas Rawls is like "here's how Justice works" and Nozick is like "here's why libertarianism is true."

Checking some footnotes reminded me of a Joseph Raz seminar on Equality where he contrasted Derek Parfit and Harry Frankfurt's philosophical style. Parfit, he said, wanted to sort everything out with many distinctions, whereas Frankfurt wanted to find the one big insight that overturned everything.

The late Derek Parfit was born on this date in 1942. Last year Josh and Ray explored his life & thought with his former student @davidedmonds100.bsky.social, author of "Parfit: A Philosopher and His Mission to Save Morality."

Currently listening to David Edmonds’ biography of him.

Parfit’s sister pointed out the issue, and her son drew up a contract to transfer ownership of their family cat to Parfit — without any care obligations, but he received a photo to display in case anybody questioned his moral integrity.
