"In Polynesian cultural heritage, each unique Partula snail shell represents an island. When humans introduced the predatory rosy wolf snail to the region to manage another invasive snail species, it wrecked Partula snail populations."  buff.ly/4eSfPJI

A crazy week: meeting new students & organising teaching for the new term, taking up my new role as Admissions Tutor @peterhousecam.bsky.social, fielding press enquiries for a paper coming out tonight (teaser photo), planning the next round of Partula reintroductions and its only Wednesday!

Final field day for this years Partula snail reintroductions. Checking up on the nodosa we released last week. All good, thanks to great work from the environment team on Tahiti and the zoos that coordinated sending the snails here @zslofficial.bsky.social @saintlouiszoo.bsky.social and Schwerin Zoo

Yesterday was a check-up on snails released on Raiatea last week. All very positive. Partula always do the unexpected, especially when you are confident you know what to expect. Released ground-living P navigatoria found 4 m up trees. Thats great as ground releases are risky with predatory flatworms

Late August 2026. London Zoo put almost everything it keeps on a scale. Humboldt penguins walk the plate on the way to breakfast. If one refuses that day, that day is skipped. A Partula snail stays under one gram. Capybaras follow the greens. The record goes into ZIMS.

Okay, one time a zoo released some of their bred animals, but usually they only espose them like goods.

An exhausting but very productive day: climbing Mt Marau and finding interesting rare snail species: Partula otaheitana which is Critically Endangered, P. cytherea which hasn't been seen alive since 1930, and one that I can't identify at the moment. 🌏🐌

Now back on Tahiti. Progress on Moorea was reasonable; the higlight being discovering a previously unknown population of the Critically Endangered Partula taeniata.

Partula taeniata, also called the Moorean viviparous tree snail, is a species of terrestrial gastropod in the Partulidae family.

Radio-tracking Partula snails does work! They have not had time to go very far, so the real test will be next week. This is encouraging for snail conservation so far.

Partula reintroductions continue: three species returned to Raiatea yesterday, and more releases of Partula nodosa on Tahiti today🐌

2026 Partula reintroductions are underway. Today we tried something new: release of radio-tagged Partula tohiveana, bred at Schwerin Zoo. The tiny tags made by

Their journey began at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Michigan, and it’s not quite over yet. The small invertebrates’ final destination is Tahiti, where they will be released into the wild as part of an international effort to reestablish wild populations of Partula snails. “The snails are sent ‘priority overnight’ via either FedEx or UPS. The snails are carefully packed using insulating materials and special ‘phase change’ packs to stabilize the temperature inside,” Mark Vassallo, Curator of Amphibians at the Detroit Zoological Society, tells Popular Science. “Currently the Detroit Zoological Society bred snails are taking a pit-stop at St. Louis Zoo where they will be fed a special diet in order to prepare them for the wild.” Partula snails are small, tree-dwelling...

> Nearly 1000 Partula snails across eight different species were prepped for reintroduction to the wild--including carefully painting each snail with UV-reflective paint & protective topcoat.

It's another vital step in the recovery of these snails, which were once extinct in the wild.

From capybaras to penguins and tiny snails, animals big and small were coaxed onto the scales for London Zoo’s annual weigh-in.

Capybara siblings Kiwi and Gizmo tipped the scales at 45kg and 50.5kg - while some tiny Partula snails weighed less than a single gram.
