She was in her nightclothes, gloveless and hair braided for whatever amount of sleep the spirits would grant her. She reached out for a rose, freeing it from the vase as a single petal drifted down. The pain of the prick was so sudden she barely noticed it, still resting the flower in her hand as she inspected the damage. A bead of crimson swelled on her index finger. The smell of it reminding her not of sugary pastries but of foulness and the duck pond after a flood. She wiped it away only for it to return quickly. She returned the rose to the vase, nestled snug like it needed sleep too. Her blood was still on her hand, now staining the pale green petals with droplets of red. It didn't even hurt, just made a mess. She was still bleeding. It wouldn't be healed by morning.
