“The Temptress” places a woman with warm brown skin directly before us, but Haitian artist Patrick Noze keeps part of her expression hidden beneath an enormous woven hat. Its broad brim drops across her eyes, while a red band around the crown is echoed by the scarf at her neck, her lipstick, polished fingernails, and the red fruit she reveals below. One hand appears to pull back a white cloth covering a basket, exposing the fruit beneath. Behind her, a fruit tree carries the same red accents, with more fruit scattered around its base. The title sharpens the significance of her gesture. The fruit may be something presented rather than merely carried, suggesting offering, abundance, and temptation. At the same time, the woman remains partly concealed. Her direct gaze is difficult to gauge beneath the hat, so the painting balances revelation with mystery. Noze turns looking into a negotiation between what is offered and what remains inaccessible. Her clothing and accessories add another layer. Broad woven straw hats have long been associated with rural Haitian life and market activity, particularly as practical protection from the sun. Paired here with the basket, fruit tree, and agricultural setting, the hat helps root the scene in everyday Haitian experience. Yet the woman is also carefully self-presented. Her red lipstick, polished nails, hoop earring, scarf, and coordinated color accents introduce glamour into the rural setting. She is not reduced to a type or occupation. She appears composed, stylish, and in control of how she is seen. Noze was born in Jérémie, Haiti, in 1962 into a family of artists. His father, Robert Noze, and grandfather, André Dimanche, were sculptors, and he later studied art in New York and attended Pratt Institute. His work ranges across portraiture, realism, abstraction, and surrealism while frequently drawing on Haitian history, memory, and daily life.
