Bitcoin developer Ben Allen has received a $100,000 grant from investment firm Maelstrom to support the development of Payjoin, a tool aimed at improving Bitcoin's scalability and privacy. Payjoin allows Bitcoin senders and receivers to use batched transactions, enhancing privacy and scalability. The system was first proposed by Nicolas Dorier in 2019 and has since been developed by Allen and Dan Gould. Maelstrom will finance Allen's work on the Payjoin devkit, with no concrete milestones and a hands-off approach. Allen will work on improving Payjoin implementations, making it possible for the feature to be added to more wallets. The system presents challenges, including the need for the receiver to be online and a more complex payment communication flow. Improving financial privacy in Bitcoin is extremely important, and Payjoin adoption can break a key assumption used by financial surveillance companies. Maelstrom is keen to support more grantees in the privacy area and is actively seeking candidates with strong track records in Bitcoin privacy projects. The firm believes that Payjoin adoption improves the privacy of even those who don't use it, and a key metric for Payjoin success would be adoption by popular open source Bitcoin wallets.
