#Peat-friendly
No matter how nature-friendly you make your garden, it will never benefit wildlife more than leaving peat intact in bogs.

Peat moss can never be harvested sustainably. Of all the soils around the world, peat makes up only 3% of the total acreage, but it sequesters 21% of the sequestered carbon. Leave it in place to be more Earth friendly.

spreadsheets are people, my friend

If you compost for your garden, skip peat-based options. Peat extraction destroys wetlands, which are major carbon sinks. Instead, use sustainable alternatives like composted leaves or coconut coir.

Crazy that Pat Mahomes gets away with being a commercial friendly "neutral" when the Mahomes fam seems to live and love MAGAland. So glad the Chiefs had their 3-peat dream snuffed out last night.

In GOOD news, @scotwildlife.bsky.social has bought a 7,618ha Highland estate for £17.5m after receiving the largest donation in its 60 year history.

It will be managed to restore native woodland and peat, as well as nature-friendly farming practices.

Update on my seedling trays:

The native plants seem to be responded much better to the peat-free seedling soil than to the traditional seedling soil I used. For instance, I took the sprouted lupine seedlings and planted half in peat-free and half in traditional. They're in the same tray though, so

Some friendly Bluesky people suggested peat-free seed starting mixes last season, but the products weren’t available here.

It looks like there are more options this month.

Please suggest products or maybe recipes for cutting dependence on #peat. Thanks! 🎃

I need better seedlings next Spring.

An ‘Insect Armageddon’
What can we do?
- Let some grass grow long, plant insect-friendly flowers
- ‘Leave the leaves’ over winter
- Turn outside lights off at night
- Buy peat-free plants, peat free compost
- Buy organic
- Leave your garden as wild as you can stand

WTAF is wrong with people? Putting solar on one's house is not cheap, certainly not for everyone. I have to be careful what goes down my drain because we are on a peat moss septic system, eco friendly. I do not correspond with anyone so the fountain pen weirdness is mute.
Oh and yeah, I drive an EV.
Hoo boy, caught a live one here.

« One potential downside is that [...] the conditioner is “pitch black” and smells like “cooked wood”, similar to peat »

that is the opposite of a downside. I want to smell like WET NATURE

How would you feel about using a hair conditioner that is pitch black and smells like peat? Its creators say it works as well as commercial alternatives, and it is eco-friendly because it is made from wood.

Amazing session on oxidation of peatland carbon - vital for understanding biogeochemical cycles through time and how we have perturbed them. Big thanks to the organisers for creating a divers, inclusive and friendly session. #EGU26
