Peatbogs are a carbon store of greater capacity than most forests, but peat is dug up to add to gardening compost. There are eco-friendly alternatives. They will tell you on the pack if they are peat-free; they will probably not tell you if it contains peat. Boycott the latter.

Rùm is the one. Two high mountains, a sweeping bay on the other side of the island (with a mausoleum!), and peatbogs in between.
And it's Nature Conservancy Council, so not really open to the general public.
One of the perks of having a Dad in the Geology Dept. at Edinburgh uni.

5 mile 'shortcut' from Kirkmichael - Glenshee maybe toughest 'ride' I'll do this year! Average speed of 3.7mph - heather & peatbogs vs Mondraker mtb. Actually my fastest time yet. Reward = excellent Glenshee Cafe at Lair. Plus much faster run back on tar! Not in the gravel rides book bought there! 😆
The Cateran mini path is invisible here. Look out for posts carefully. Thick heather let's you park your bike anywhere. 😆 Cateran Trail is straight ahead if you look carefully. This excellent guide to gravel routes by Markus Stitz is available at the Glenshee Cafe at Lair. Or online from Vertebrae. Strava map of Cateran mini trail. Main Cateran Trail is totally different route and much easier in most places.
