Railfreight Petroleum liveried 37421 ‘Pectinidae’ pauses at Shrewsbury. If I recall correctly, I had just arrived on this; a far cry from when I’d previously ridden it on the far north line! #Class37 #Tractor #Shrewsbury #RegionalRailways

Fun scallop facts:
- some of them swim! some of them swim FAST
- they can have ~200 eyes
- Pectinidae (true scallops) evolved around the same time as the dinosaurs (~250Mya)
- they live all around the world including under Antarctic sea ice
- they can be yellow, pink, purple, red!
What a cool thing to study.

I ran into a researcher studying live scallops on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. He showed me that scallops have blue eyes inside the curves of their shells.

Any other interesting facts you can share about scallops?

Chlamys varia, also known as the variegated scallop, is a small bi-valve mollusc in the scallop family, Pectinidae. It occurs in the North Sea, the English Channel, the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea, living at depths of up to around 100 m along coastal rocky areas.

This majestic fossil shell is a #StaffFavourite. 🌊🐚

Commonly known as a scallop, this shell belongs to the Pectinidae family.

This fossil is approximately 3 million years old but Pecten maximus can still be found along the English coast today.

Definitely a bivalve but it's a lesser known deep sea one, so it'll likely be hard to find. The mantle, the shell and the tentacles are all really good identifiers. Can't see a pedicle which a brachiopod would have. noaa identifies it as likely a scallop

"Scallops are neither male nor female. They can be both, or they can switch: male to female, female to male, according to the seasons and their biological needs. Scallop gender is as fluid as the ocean that they live within" – @miseanja.bsky.social, Naturefile (5 mins.)

Fange plankton, så my' vi klarer,
og skvette unna når det kommer farer,
ja det skal vi gjøre når det er andre dags jul.🎵
