Thirty years ago today, the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Pelindaba, opened for signature in Cairo, Egypt, and was signed by 47 states. To date, 51 of 54 African states have signed and 43 have ratified this treaty, which entered into force on July 15, 2009.

All of the land and most of the oceans in the Southern Hemisphere are officially nuclear-weapon-free zones thanks to this and four other landmark international treaties—the Antarctic Treaty (1959), the Treaty of Tlatelolco (1967), the Treaty of Rarotonga (1985), and the Treaty of Pelindaba (1996).
