I have also been thinking about this. My guess is that there are a number of factors, but chief among them is that the people willing to do this kind of hatchet work are not the high performers (or to put it another way, the high performers have the option of quitting)

Already re-skeeted this but it bears repeating until it finally freaking sinks in. What audiobook performers do is skill and talent both—it's artistry—and handing words over to the soulless plagiarism theftware machine is—and should always be—a non-starter.
Voice actors are artists too. Like translators, like editors, like cover artists, they deserve authors' solidarity in the face of genAI fuckery. We are all in this together.
