"Periderm is a magical barrier"

@hengqi.bsky.social (from @lauraragni.bsky.social lab) represented the DOMPS community at the Developmental & Stem Cell Biology Seminar, talking about how cytokinin signaling shapes the development of the protective barrier periderm in Arabidopsis roots. #PlantSci

New research from our department + partners led by Elizabeth Leslie-Clarkson! Genetic variants in PRKCI causing Van der Woude syndrome: cleft lip/palate + lip pits. This is 3rd gene responsible for VWS -- 1st (IRF6) discovered in 2002 #Genesky @scgdb.bsky.social www.cell.com/ajhg/abstrac...
Rare variants in PRKCI cause Van der Woude syndrome and other features of peridermopathy
De novo missense variants in PRKCI are loss of function and disrupt periderm, resulting in a heterogeneous phenotype including orofacial clefts, clinical features of Van der Woude syndrome, and relate...

This UMAP of Arabidopsis root secondary growth looks like a cross section of the root: xylem on one side and phloem on the other side, with periderm outside of phloem.

Analysis of Acyl Solamines in Tuber Periderm of Cultivated and Wild Potatoes Using Liquid Chromatography Coupled With Electrospray Ionization Quadrupole Time‐of‐Flight Mass Spectrometry
Acyl solamines are a poorly investigated class of alkaloids found in several solanaceous plants. A general screening approach on the basis of all-ion fragmentation is proposed for this compound class...

5/Expansion of periderm cells following endodermis rupture is the first physical response to mechanical release.

Yet expansion alone is not enough: phellem differentiation also requires FER-dependent signaling through an intact, mechanically competent cell wall.

Injured plants use gaseous cues to initiate repair of their outer layers
The periderm layers of plants form an outer protective barrier. If the periderm is broken, movement of the gases ethylene and oxygen triggers a healing process.

Logged into my old Dalhousie email account for the first time in years, and see I missed an email debate in 2021 on the graptolite workers listserv about swapping the terms 'rhabdosome' and 'periderm' for 'tubarium' and 'nidamentum' in 2021. Intense stuff! :)

🌱🧬 Plants sense barrier injury through gas diffusion. Wounded periderm leaks ethylene and lets oxygen in, lowering ethylene and hypoxia signals. This triggers regeneration. Once repaired, signals return to baseline.

A general principle for wound healing #plantscience www.nature.com/articles/s41...
