#Peroxidases
Good addition to a lecture on alternative theories and evidence.

In the 1990s there was a huge fun website on the advent of lignin peroxidases and the P/T mass extinction. They went at it like a wild-haired red yarn conspiracy theorist which might be why they couldn't manage to publish it.

ROS is the perennial bad actor in living systems (aerobic life).

We have to remember that these are models not in living systems where life is founded on managing oxygen. There a multiple redundant systems in place to quench ROS if they are generated. Superoxide dismutase, peroxidases, even

Citric acid alters Arabidopsis root morphology and development through ROS-dependent and ROS-independent mechanisms
Citric acid is a central metabolite that modulates peroxidases and transcription factors to induce differential growth changes in primary and anchor roots.

Many of the species that were positively correlated with tree basal area belong to the Cortinariaceae, a family that contains many 'ectomycorrhizal decomposers' that produce class II peroxidases to mobilize nitrogen under nitrogen-poor conditions, as shown in this recent paper by Barbi et al.:
Ectomycorrhizal <fc><fi>Cortinariaceae</fi></fc> species dominate class <fc>II</fc> peroxidase gene expression in a boreal forest soil

Performing a Genome x Environment Analysis, we identified loci correlated with climatic variables in Marchantia polymorpha, among which a loci encoding for an ABC1 atypical kinase, that could be involved in abscisic acid-related stress response. And peroxidases (again). And a NLR. (10/18)

And we found significantly more gene families bearing the same selection signatures than expected by chance. This means that some gene families (terpenes synthases, peroxidases…) are repeatedly recruited for adaptation across the range of land plants! (9/18)
February 17, 2025 at 10:29 AM
Then we identified genes under selective pressure in M. polymorpha, and noticed that Marchantia’s polymorphic genes are likely to mediate the interactions between the plant and its environment (e.g. pathogenesis related proteins, lectins or peroxidases) (7/18)

8/ This all suggests that drugs containing 8AQ are unlikely to undergo reduction reactions in the human body because the required potentials are not reachable. However, these drugs might undergo oxidation reactions due to the activity of e.g. cytochromes or peroxidases.

In the cell, there are several enzymes designed to prevent free-radical damage:

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) which takes out (you guessed it) superoxide
and
peroxidases/catalases which take out hydrogen peroxide.

There are no anti-hydroxyl enzymes b/c hydroxyl is gone too fast.
