Fun fact: confirmed miasmatist max von Pettenkofer (villain of the cholera-is-waterborne saga) was the guy who came up with measuring co2 indoors as a surrogate for ventilation. The building engineers have a Von Pettenkofer award.

In the 1800's Max Josef von Pettenkofer proposed 1000 ppm of CO2 as a marker of inadequate ventilation indoors (outdoor CO2 concentration was below 300 ppm at the time).

This fatalism found favour with the laissez-faire Hamburg merchant class, who feared the economic impacts of lockdowns—the “panic” they induced was “worse than the disease”. Engineering solutions were dismissed, using Pettenkofer as justification, for being too expensive and futile.

Never could cholera infection be spread between people as a waterborne contagion ingested through contaminated drinking water. Thus, Pettenkofer held boiling or filtering drinking water to be useless. He clung to a fatalistic dogma that once an epidemic erupted, taking any action was futile.

Pettenkofer only got mild diarrhoea, his stool remaining culture positive until day 6, leading him to declare Koch’s view of cholera as a waterborne contagion to have been definitively falsified! It was the period equivalent of scoring a favourable systematic review, saying COVID isn't airborne

According to Pettenkofer, only in deep groundwater was the cholera bacillus (the "X factor") transformed by a mysterious “Y factor” into a pathological agent. On reaching deep groundwater, under the influence of a “Z factor”, it released a gaseous miasma that caused disease when inhaled.
