"I got my PhD by writing prompts instead of doing research, I'm winning"

got some bad news, there still no jobs and now you also know nothing

This is the kind of idiocy you get on Threads.

I think the main purpose of pursuing a PhD is to develop your thinking, research, and communication skills, which you can't do in 45 minutes on Claude.

Here’s the moment when one of my PhD student’s (Joey Schafer) research on Bluesky influencers intersects with my other PhD students’ (Nina Lutz and Adiza Awwal) research on visual representation (and propaganda) within WNBA discourse. Honestly didn’t see this coming…

Doing research for my new book and looking at best ripostes to mansplaining. The favourite so far is:

“Please don’t confuse your Google search with my PHD.”

Congratulations to Dr. TINA PETERSEN for successfully defending her PhD on tool use in chimpanzees at the University of St. ANDREWS with minor revisions. Great collaboration with Josep Call and TCP. Looking forward to more research like this.

Really tragic. I got my PhD from Hopkins and think the school has contributed so much with its research dollars
We just got an email that Hopkins is freezing salaries, hiring, and some construction projects. In addition to the 800 million USAID we lost, we’ve had another 50 million in grants canceled so far. And a 2/3 year over year decline in funded grants despite an increase in submissions

Officially finished my PhD and defended on Friday, May 22 🎉🎓

It’s been years of balancing teaching, research, work, and mental health – with plenty of challenges and growth along the way.

This means a lot, and I still can’t believe that it’s done.

Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.
It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.

It took me 5.5 yrs to finish my PhD & another 2 to publish my dissertation research in a cancer research journal.

PhD students are not allowed to stay in the US beyond 4 yrs now.

One by one, isolationist policies are driving people out and deterring international talent.

Rachel Riley has a PhD in Social Policy from Oxford - no scientific research or naval experience.

The Admiral has a PhD in Computer Science.

More of the Trump assault on science.
Bad news for science today. Rachel Riley moved from HHS, where she gutted NIH and the largest part of US biomedical research, to the office of Naval Research, where she presumably will gut the science funded by ONR.

How to stop this? Impeach her boss, the Project 2025 co-head Russell Vought.

Five years of work, five accepted research papers, a Scottish pterosaur, numerous breakdowns, all in one doctorate 🎓 Finally the PhD is formally over 🎓

This is a recipe for financially ruining U.S. research universities: 1) Vastly and rapidly reduce funding for research and infrastructure; 2) Scare international students, whose tuition helps fund PhD students (as TAs), away. These folks know exactly what they're doing.

Interested in moving your research to Ireland? Research Ireland have just launched a new call to recruit mid-career (5-15 year post PhD) and established researchers (>15 years post PhD).

Now, we don't have the PhD student's side of the story. But there's research on women PhD students and postdocs in STEM fields showing that they often leave their programs because of the sexist mistreatment they face from men like this.

Harvard is the 'best case scenario' for US research pedagogy (at least, financially). They have a $57bn endowment. I think the takeaway here is that the days of most PhD programs in the US are numbered

NIH grants & money has been stopped. Hundreds of laboratories around the country that do fundamental research on vital aspects of our health have stopped. No new PHD students. Cancer & all medical research has stopped. This is a major collapse . Call GOP Senators- Capitol Switchboard 202-224-3121.
