When South Korea retired the Phantom in May of 2024, they held a retirement party.

Well done.

I think this one is on a ramp in the US, but it's interesting seeing where markings were painted out, and how weathering has affected the paint on the plane.

In the early 90s the EAF sent some of their F-4s to the USA for maintenance/upgrades, via Iceland?

Okay?

The EAF roundel was painted out, and USAF national insignia painted amidships.

Here's an Egyptian Phantom in the snow.

As the Phantom was a popular aircraft with the world's air forces, the Egyptians painted wingtips and tails in red, yellow, or orange to identify their aircraft.

(They may all be the same color, but faded in the desert sun?)

It might seem strange, but yes, Egypt did fly the F-4 Phantom II.

After the Camp David Accords, Egypt lost the support of the Soviet Union and Saudi Arabia.

They turned to the arsenal of democracy, and acquired 40-ish F-4Es to tide themselves over until F-16s were made available.

At VX-4, plane assignments were made by color.

"Why do I have to fly the orange one? I like the black one!"

For #PhantomPhriday, VMFA-314 BLACK KNIGHTS is in the spotlight.

“In 1961, the squadron became the first Marine squadron to transition to the new F-4B Phantom II and was designated VMFA-314. Between 1961 and 1964, the squadron deployed eight times.”

Frank Petersen commanded BLACK KNIGHTS in Vietnam.

The first African-American Marine aviator, he would go on to be the first African-American Marine Corps general.
