#Philippides
Best of luck to to everyone running the London and Manchester marathons today! Hydrate properly, so you don’t end up like Philippides at mile 25. And go with joy!

The actual story was of Philippides running from Athens to Sparta and back. About 250 miles. Which is 100% bad for your health.

Philippidès n’aurait pas couru 40 km… mais près de 240 km !

Hate when I’m on my morning run and the local jogger who is always in a black hoodie comes next to me and says “You can’t outrun me, I caught Philippides in Athens, it might take decades but I will catch you, you can’t outrun me.” It’s like bro, earphones in means no talking!

According to Lucian, Philippides ran from the site of the battle of Marathon to Athens, a distance of around 25 miles. When he arrived he said, χαιρετε νικωμεν - Rejoice, we win! And then he collapsed, breathing his last, along with the joy.

If marathons are gonna honor the distance Philippides ran after the battle why don't they also honor the part where he collapsed and died at the end? It'd be a bit of a dark turn but I think it makes things more authentic.

a marathon is basically an event where a bunch of people get together to clown on Philippides the messenger for dying

Just do what Philippides did and run as hard as you can and then die when you are done

The connection with Marathon is first made by Lucian in his Pro lapsu inter salutandum, or A Slip of the Tongue in Greeting. Lucian mentions a runner named Philippides, in a piece about how people greet one another with the word χαίρετε - Rejoice!
