Just found a reference to something in an 18th century manuscript that I've been looking for since about ...2015? So delighted. Philology is a tough slog but occasionally very joyful.

Nietzsche's philology was so bad that the main defense of it appears to be that he wasn't really trying to do philology. I'm not even a philologist but it is quite obvious.

The sheer ignorance of 75+ years' research in theology, philology, history & archaeology commits the USA to the most backward, uninformed culture on the planet. Reagan made 32 public statements claiming his generation would witness the apocalypse! And they call themselves 'progressive.'

It doesn’t directly of course. But I do think it’s relevant as a background factor for interpreting the era of composition, which can still be confounded by archaizing, quotation, reedition, and all the other problems that philology is heir to.
