"A Critique of Pure AI"

If intelligence is merely optimization then machines will outrun us. However...

Emmanuel Kant tells us why human reason is so much more.

Reason is more than a tool 🧪

I can’t believe an outrageously complicated outcome of some form statistical learning is not simply subject to my parochial armchair philosophizing

OK, AV definitely has its version of this... "safety" isn't as simple or totalizing a goal as the believers thought early on, but because it's more plausibly reducible to quantifiable metrics than "did we make a real boy?" it didn't inspire the same level of fervent philosophizing

Some typos as well for good measure

Much of philosophizing is unfalsifiable in a different way, as it's just a matter of if you agree with a way of looking at the world and if a framework of describing reality makes sense to you. Not about faith in the existence of things but being convinced of arguments. Those I quite like personally

This is all straight out of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with Captain Nemo philosophizing to his prisoners over a weird sci fi dinner.

But let's keep going. Athens was THE poster city for "soft men" in classical Greece, the center of philosophy trade and democracy, and Sparta was the hardest of the hard. Guess who won when they went to war? The philosophizing diplomats. Guess who left the bigger mark on Greek culture? Athens.

I have my own history. Some parts shameful, some parts laughable, and some parts irreplaceable. But for now, all that philosophizing and grandstanding can wait. I have my Gameboy Color and Blue version. Even if they don't work after so long... That can be fixed. The memories persist, and so will we.

2026: Querying DeepSeek in English and Chinese: Differences
Large Language Model AI systems can a fine information search tool as long as we keep in mind their biases, limitations, strengths and weaknesses. Otherwise we may trick ourselves into dependence upon cyber overlords. That could happen even if the threat of looming monsters of quasi?-fascist accelerationism advocates exist only in our minds and overheated philosophizing. Below I compare the results of Chinese and English language queries to China's…

and the liability landed on the safety driver, not the people who shipped the perception stack. courts do sort it out, just not at the level anyone's philosophizing about.

Sounds like “getting something done.” I mean, he’d be obligated to thank everyone for it, given that it means we’d paid some attention to his philosophizing.

Yudowski is the Aristotle of AI philosophizing. He was early, wrote a lot, and was wrong about everything.

here in the real world, the actual context we currently occupy, I think defending and reinforcing the intrinsic value of every human is much more important than indulging in a branch of abstract philosophizing that tends toward the opposite effect

how do these dudes have so much time to be philosophizing this much

But the stuff people talk about in dorm room philosophizing is useful for me as an instructor, because it can give me a way to relate the really complex topics I address to *some* thought or experience my students have had in their lives already
September 23, 2026 at 10:27 PM
the thing is that if you try to do dorm room philosophizing with academics, you'll just get your ass kicked. I tried it my first year as a grad student and ended up having to change programs 😅
September 23, 2026 at 10:26 PM
man, the cultural associations of the matrix are literally "dorm-room philosophizing," that's why it's so funny when e.g. Elon Musk starts talking about it in his sexts

Finally, is all this AI grandiose philosophizing by Zuckerberg, Huang, Altman, Dario, Andreesen, Hassabis et al just more AI hype?

Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games, the season finale!

Endless philosophizing about fighting games, an incredible final match demonstrating that the show is *fully* locked the fuck in, and sweet yuri jealousy over your "rival" fighting someone other than you.
