Feel like there’s a lot of new people here so here’s a reintroduction: I’m a phonetician and cognitive scientist interested in how your brain produces, perceives, and learns the sounds of the world’s spoken languages.

When a talker repeats the same vowel sequence 34 times in quick succession, a good phonetician simply can’t let that opportunity pass.

One thing about being a phonetician, as opposed to say, a plumber, is that I can't just quit my job and show up in Dublin or Toronto and try to find work. Also, my job pays less than a plumber and is less useful to people. That's three things.

I believe you already know, but Ian Maddieson (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Mad...) passed away this Sunday ☹️. He was an amazing person, typologist and phonetician and we will miss him a lot. Personally, he was one of the few who in 2007 didn't laugh at the idea that genes might affect linguistic tone.

I'm not a phonetician but I am an #rstats and #ggplot stan, and it was really fun making some Lingthusiasm-themed vowel plots! The recording is a patreon bonus episode, but the vowel plot tutorial code is on GitHub:

bethanyhgardner.github.io/lingthusiasm...

(1/10)
It can be hard to hear subtle differences between vowels, so linguists also make visual versions of them

We talk with Dr Bethany Gardner about how they plotted 400 vowels from previous Lingthusiasm episodes onto a graph to show how our accents differ!
