Eventually, the larvae completely devour the ant's brain, causing it to wander aimlessly for about two weeks. After about two to four weeks, they cause the ant's head to fall off by releasing an enzyme that dissolves the membrane attaching the ant's head to its body.

A female Physoptera (Phoridae) showing off/advertising her presence, by releasing pheromones through her abdominal glands (the yellow stripes on her abdomen). As you can see they have reduced abdominal plates (tergites) that allow these glands to expand

ID update based on iNaturalist comments. The yellow flies feeding on the harvestman are:
Gall and Forest Midges (Cecidomyiidae), not Phoridae.

Happy Friday Fly Day! Two sets of flies from a recent survey in Western North Carolina:
Snipe Fly - Rhagio species (male)
Scuttle Flies - Phoridae
These flies were scavenging a dead Harvestman, Opiliones species.

Poor image but excellent record

Diplonevra abbreviata (Phoridae) sampled at @kneppwilding.bsky.social last year during the @opwall.bsky.social field season

It’s a whopper (~5cm) with one record on @nbntrust.bsky.social!! You all need to go find this beauty @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

#ElkeDagEenInsect

Happy Taxonomist Appreciation Day, y'all.

There's undescribed biodiversity all around us! Not long ago, Brian Brown and Emily Hartop put up some malaise traps smack in the middle of Los Angeles, and right away they described 30 new species of phorid flies.

🐝 Unlike bees, many pollinators in boreal forests are flies (Diptera, especially Muscidae, Phoridae and Syrphidae). These ectotherms depend heavily on external heat for activity.

Lets put on some perfume. This female Megaselia (Phoridae) releases from her dorsal abdominal glands, a fragrance so strong the males just have to immerse themselves in it
