#Photosynthesis
Dr. Pierre Joliot, Marie & Pierre Curie's grandson, who discovered the molecular mechanisms underlying how water splits & oxygen is released into the atmosphere via photosynthesis, has died. He studied photosynthesis for 70 yrs, even pursuing how plants 'wake up' daily after nights in darkness 👇
Born to a science dynasty, he broke away and made a photosynthesis breakthrough
French biologist Pierre Joliot helped answer how photosynthetic organisms split water to produce the oxygen that sustains life on Earth. He died Oct. 10 at 94.

TaANT11‐4A enhances grain yield by orchestrating photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism through direct transcriptional activation
TaANT11-4A is a positive regulator of wheat grain size and yield, directly activating TaEGY2, TaAAE1, and TaAAE2 to enhance photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism. The favorable Hap2 haplotype in...

Photosynthesis, do you mean photosynthesis?
On Monday, at long last, I am recording a podcast on AGRIVOLTAICS, ie, siting solar panels on working agricultural or grazing land. Everyone is fascinated by this subject and I'm finally gonna dig in.

Got questions?

Systems-level orchestration of oxygenic photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation in cyanobacteria | Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews
SUMMARYDiazotrophic cyanobacteria represent a unique group of prokaryotes that are capable of performing two physiologically conflicting processes: oxygen-generating photosynthesis and oxygen-sensitive nitrogen fixation. Adaptive evolution over millions of years has culminated in two complex, divergent strategies—spatial and temporal separation—that allow extant cyanobacteria to reconcile these antagonistic pathways. While the long-studied spatial separation strategy utilized by most filamentous strains is well understood at the molecular level, the temporal separation mechanisms in unicellular and non-heterocystous filamentous cyanobacteria remain an expanding but under-reviewed area of research. This review focuses on the orchestration of photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation in cyanobacteria, with an emphasis on temporal separation. We discuss molecular mechanisms driving the synchronization of carbon and nitrogen fixation in filamentous cyanobacteria, highlighting recent findings that elucidate the complex regulatory networks involved in maintaining an optimal C/N balance. In contrast, for unicellular cyanobacteria, where regulatory mechanisms are less defined, we synthesize various discoveries that challenge the prevailing view that these prokaryotes are metabolically disadvantaged by strict diurnal constraints. We review studies that indicate the metabolic plasticity of these strains, potentially conferred by effective oxygen-protective mechanisms, including a robust circadian clock that regulates intracellular oxygen levels. This plasticity allows adaptation to diverse diurnal conditions, preferentially segregating the incompatible processes into opposite phases while also accommodating both processes under light when daylength conditions are suboptimal. Such metabolic flexibility likely predisposes these prokaryotes to be naturally selected for nitrogen-fixing symbioses with eukaryotes and eventually, as recently demonstrated, to evolve into a nitrogen-fixing organelle.

Sunday morning coffee. Thinking about the midterms on Tuesday. We’ve been talking a lot about 'Operation Photosynthesis' at school—how the smallest seeds of action change the landscape. Voting is our way of planting those seeds for our future. #Midterms2026 #CivicDuty

My goal with this evolution game is to make it so creatures' body shapes really matter. For example, if animals have one giant wing for a head, they're not going to fly very well! But it might not matter because they're covered in leaves and can survive using photosynthesis
