#Physician-Scientists
A whole generation of early career scientists and physician-scientists, including colleagues and myself, are particularly vulnerable to these funding freezes and cuts, with jobs and careers depending on federal grants.

“In her complaint, the scientist, Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, who had directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, objected to Trump administration actions, alleging that they had endangered research subjects, defied court orders and undermined vaccine research.”

"Covid czar"?

He's a physician-scientist and immunologist who pursued solutions during a global pandemic and gave us the truth. He's the former director of the NIAID and one of the most cited scientists in journals for 19 years. You may be spineless, but he isn't.

I need more physician scientists to absorb this message. Do not put your data into any LLM system.
The obvious conclusion (to me): if you have proprietary research & you upload it into the Plagiarism Nexus, it's not YOUR proprietary research anymore.

Behave accordingly.

Truth spoken by @rubinallergy.bsky.social: "Turning one of the nation’s most accomplished physician-scientists into the central focus of political theater doesn’t help us prepare for the next public health crisis"
I agree with @drsandman11.medsky.social: If you didn't look like this & doing everything you can to prevent people from dying during the pandemic, maybe think twice before judging Dr. Fauci.

If you are an NIH or CDC scientist that lost your job, we have a home for you at UTHealth. I’m hiring physician scientists and we also have transplant ID fellowship slots open. Contact me. #IDSky #MedSky

Yep. It’s even more insanely difficult for physician-scientists, who, thanks to clinical obligations, have far less time to devote to grant writing. At least we physician-scientists can go back to being full time clinicians if we can’t get funded. Basic scientists don’t have that option.
When I explain to people what is involved with writing a successful grant, they simply don’t believe me.

I explained it once to a famous person from Pixar, and he looked me square in the eye and said: You mean all the cancer and Alzheimer’s grants work that way? You’ve gotta be &$%#ing kidding me!
I don't think you non-science people realize what it takes to get a grant funded by NIH. Started experiments in Sept 2021 to generate 3 new mouse mutants to model human disease. Prelim dara shows they have relevant disease phenotypes worthy of study. Need a small grant first to characterize /1

People in my comments are telling me, a physician and scientist, that we should believe what RFK Jr and DJT said last week about Tylenol because we should believe “scientists.” It makes me wonder: do they even know how to tell if someone is a scientist?

It's really hard to tell young wanna-be-physician-scientists that the future for a career in science and medicine is bright right now.

We have PhD-MD physician scientists because there’s a generally accepted understanding that being a practicioner of something and being a scientist of it are distinct skillsets with different training, but for some reason “legal academia” lawyers get to freely cosplay as historians and economists

Claiming to be pro-family, Trump’s research funding cuts only limit our understanding of the environmental factors that may contribute to infertility. After ending Dr. Mahalingaiah’s research grant, her lab had to lay off young physician scientists, further limiting future scientific discoveries.

Fired: CDC's most recently hired Epidemic Intelligence Services officers – the people who fight disease outbreaks.

They are not mere "probationary" staff. They are "Fellows" who are physician-scientists in a globally recognized applied epidemiology training program.
An update on HHS cuts today

#1 - all of CDC's most recent class of Epidemic Intelligence Services officers, aka agency's "disease detectives," are among cuts

#2 - Stat is reporting that NIH is working out which probationary to cut

www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/f...
The latest I've heard on cuts at HHS

- FDA officials say heard nothing about probationary cuts, so far
- lots of rumors at NIH about cuts, all from a Reddit thread I think, but nothing official yet?
- many contractors have contracts not renewed

I like what Japan does with money: no politicians but instead scientists, authors, etc. Currently:
¥1000- Kitasato Shibasaburō physician and bacteriologist
¥5000- Tsuda Umeko educator who founded Tsuda University
¥10000- Shibusawa Eiichi business magnate.
