Looking down into a purple cabbage in a garden plot: the large rounded leaves form a spiral, going from the outside's velvety green with purple overtones and red veins, to darker purple as you approach the deep purple heart. The leaves are spread out at the outside, and more tightly furled as they grow near the heart, where the bud that will be the harvested cabbage hides, protected by the curled leaves. A few water drops cling here and there, remains from when an early morning gardener watered the plot before the heat of the day.

A photo of the community garden in the early morning, in dappled sunlight, before the heat starts. From my POV, you can see, on the left, my wooden 4ft by 8ft box with vegetables growing well. Next to it is a chair with my gray shih tzu, Monty, underneath enjoying the shade. Beyond my box you can see several other elevated beds, and off to the left in tha background is our red Sharing Shed, with bright blue bee hive boxes on its roof. The boxes are almost the same color as the sky. At the edge you see the fences of the houses bordering the patch, with purple plum trees providing shade.

Kiwi berries on the hardy kiwi! Went early to the P-Patch, watered and did my volunteer stuff, and happened to look up on my way out. These are about the size of a large grape and can get about twice as big.

A couple of clusters of green kiwi berries hang down amid the leaves overhead. The berries are oblong, smooth, and still have the pistils and stamens attached at the bud end, looking a bit like Christmas stars. The white-veined, lanceolate, serrate leaves are dark green with red stems. You can see a bit of early morning sky peeking through the leafy canopy.

The last plums, and almost last apples (one harvest to go). The apples and plums are picked by volunteers and shared with food share organizations and the P-Patch gardeners.

Spent some time this morning working in the P-Patch Children's Garden.

Children's Garden plant beds have a lot of variation . On the left, a couple of kids decided to make an all marigold bed, full of yellow, orange and red marigollds. A bright blue metal headboard sits at the end of the bed(!). The next bed is split in two. At the top, the sister decided to make a veggie bed with peas, swiss chard (one of which has bolted ) and lettuce. The brother decided to do a bunny garden with begonias, nasturtiums and marigolds, to enchant the bunnies, I guess. In the bacground you can see other beds full of green stuff, the grape arbor entrance on the left, and the buildings of the school that borders one end. The Children's Garden has a sunflower hut, with the sunflower walls growing. The walls are mostlybunder 2 feet right now. The hut is 8sided, and uses an old patio umbrella frame as a roof, to hold up the wooden poles that will be used to tether the sunflowers when they get bigger. There are various brightly colored child sized garden implements scattered about. Once again, the other beds are full of green growth, and the school walls full of classroom windows look down on the plots. This is a high school. I wonder what the students think of when the kids are put there working? Or maybe they're office windows? The Children's Garden is growing its yearly scarlet runner bean teepee. You can see that the beans are making good progress, about halfway up the poles. There are red flowers growing among the green vines. This year they needed to put a chicken wire fence around the teepee because the rabbits were eating the bean shoots!
