Having lived in the South: there is in fact a hidden reserve of communist rednecks, but you do need to stop sneering at them for liking guns and pickup trucks.
IMHO, the synthesis is that a blue south is possible but it's only possible through educational polarization shifting whites with college degrees leftwards plus a supercharged black vote guarded by civil rights protections. There is no hidden reserve of communist rednecks.
