I feel like this is a good example of why well covered systems could benefit from new emulators and attention and dev focus. Unsure what issues blast em has. I know 32x is kind of a challenge for newer emus though I hear picodrive handles it.

the problem is the only other real options either have their own problems (blastem) or are only available as a libretto core (picodrive, and i probably don't need to reiterate what's wrong with libretro). genuinely fusion is still the best for some things and it's kind of depressing

That is a bummer to hear. There's been so much commitment to getting MD audio right with stuff like MD Fourier that I just hoped there was a reliable choice. I've heard picodrive is good but being stuck as a libretro core is limiting. No one should ever be asked to use retroarch. Hmmm

I love the Genesis Plus GX UI on Wii but retroarch picodrive core lets me way better display I'm sory :(

i usually just use Kega Fusion or (for very stupid reasons) Dolphin, though i only really have these kinds of issues on PC, as i've got md.emu on Android and PicoDrive on PSP and 3DS

as far I know PicoDrive on RetroArch has no option for mouse control for some stupid reason, what I use instead is the standalone PicoDrive emulator from like 2007, which works well enough for an emulator that old

It's most likely the issue, yes. The latest version of PicoDrive 3DS I could find is from 2018.

just checked gametechwiki to make sure i wasn't spreading misinformation and apparently blastem is extremely accurate but it doesn't support the 32x or scd or anything (the UI is also a bit annoying)
picodrive and ares do but picodrive is a libretro core only and i have sound issues with ares

BlastEm, PicoDrive, ares, MesenCE... there are alot of options. emulation gametechwiki is also a good resource if you're having trouble finding any
