Today's sampling of backyard critters. #birds
A Gray Catbird (unsurprisingly, mostly gray but with a black cap and darker wings) perches on a hedge. Its open beak gives it a surprised demeanor. Gray Catbird is now *aghast*. It's perched near side-on to us, wings dropped, beak and eye wide open. A relatively wide shot of a male House Finch, standing quietly in a hedge. Most of its body is mottled brown, black and white, but its head and rump have a red wash to them. Perched on a small yellow flower, a white butterfly with back dots and tips on its wings probes for nectar. Probably a Cabbage White, Pieris rapae.

In The King's Forest, #Suffolk Brecks, on Saturday we saw 2-3 v active Clouded Yellow (Colias crocea) #butterflies, a rather tattered Green-veined White (Pieris napi) still being attractive to a ♂️, Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) & a dead Black Snail Beetle (Phosphuga atrata). #invert #butterfly

Der Sommerflieder ist am Verblühen, ein paar Blütenknospen sehe ich noch am Strauch.
Es sind auch heute Insekten unterwegs, also Tagpfauenaugen, #Aglais io und Kohlweißling, Gattung Pieris.
Ein etwa drei Meter hoher Sommerflieder. Ein Strauch Mönchspfeffer. Ein Tagpfauenauge. Ein Kleiner Kohlweißling.

So of the +/- 10 butterfly species I saw the last few days in the Ghent area, 3 species were not present in Flanders 20 years ago! Meanwhile it has been 17 months since I've seen my last small tortoiseshell in the region. Is your #butterfly species composition also changing this fast? (3/3)

A mallow skipper is camping in the garden already for a week or so, busy chasing other butterflies. And while cleaning up the moth trap this morning a female southern small white came sunning in front of me. (1/3)
