Deep in the woods, a redcedar decays, decorated with an array of lichens and moss

A decaying redcedar stump sits alongside a trail through the woods. Its rough bark is covered with patches of gray, blue-green and green lichens, with a few long stem-like shaggy "horns" where apothecia will grow. You can see some interior wood, very deeply colored red brown blocks, in breaks in the bark.

Trailside miniature scenery: Three birds nest mushrooms, shaped like white cups with a frilly rim, sit empty of spores next to a bright green cushion of moss. The ground level setting has twigs and bits of duffy materials in shades of brown and gray, intermingled with various tiny moss fragments . And I just found out that duff in British English means something quite different than in American English. To USians, duff is the decaying fluffy layered vegetable matter, usually on a forest floor.
