#Pillarboxes
rescanned my TV since SBS2 is back, and Just saw FTA Nickelodeon airing 4:3 spongebob in 16:10, leaving pillarboxes on a 16:9 display. what a weird compromise.

I hate stretched images so if im on a widescreen display i'll always just take the pillarboxes to keep the aspect ratio correct lol.

people keep fabricating ultrawide monitor arguments online who is acting like they're being forced to use or not use one, all that happens when games don't support it 90% of the time is that you get used to the pillarboxes in 3 minutes and then it's a normal 16:9 video game

I think I'm going to have to stitch images together manually, at this point. Picking something that should be high enough resolution is instead crunching it down vertically, which reintroduces the pillarboxes. Can't win.

Playing "Jedi: Fallen Order" on a super ultra wide monitor, and the cutscenes very cleverly mesh with gameplay by lining up camera and scene... But they are rendered in 16:9, resulting in pillarboxes popping in and out, ruining the effect lol

For Ghost Trick they just digitized the creator's dog, just stuck him in there

other than that, i think widescreen hacks for retro 3D games are fine as long as they don't ruin the HUD/stretch the screen (trust me, i know the OCD-like response in my brain when i see black bars/pillarboxes all too well)

I made it!

Either they weren't doing the EES thing at all today, or it just scanning your passport at the gate and the press have managed to make it sound like more faff than it is (no fingerprint taking for starters).

Making sure all my custom games and TV shows in Tomodachi Life have pillarboxes because I don't want them to have a cropped or stretched widescreen experience with older media.

Funny thing is the monitor in my new cab might be the one she's using only it's been matted to cover the pillarboxes and give the impression it's not a widescreen monitor 😅

There were about a dozen episodes from season 4 that I haven't watched yet.. I've archived them in my media center so they can be at my fingertips.. BTW some of them have pillarboxes hardcoded in so I run them through handbrake to crop that out!

I've done Wirrral WW2 pillboxes & fire decoys, water courses, all accessible underpasses between Junction 1 and Junction 10 of the M53 motorway, and am moving on to documenting historical pillarboxes. I think accurately dating fingerposts could be next after that 🫣😀👍

That got me thinking ... I wondered if there are any Edward VIII pillarboxes, or did he abdicate before they got that off the ground?

Turns out there are, but they are rare. Apparently there is one near me in Birkenhead, so I'm gonna go and check that one out, sometime soon 👍

My dorky hot take of the day is that the worst thing you can do to try to fill a 16:9 screen with 4:3 video is to add that funhouse mirror effect along the sides that duplicates what's on the edge of the video. You're much better off just leaving black pillarboxes.

I think all pillarboxes should have bells on... oh wait....just a recent festive scene in Holborn.

A video on my skyline was vertical with black pillarboxes but most of the video was horizontal with a blurry duplication effect to fill the frame and yes, Max who didn’t want to move off of 4:3 displays, we are fully in hell now

trying to figure out how to crop a 16:9 source with pillarboxes, to a 4:3 frame with kdenlive is tonight's headache material. closest i got was moving the source to the center so it gains letterboxes on top of the pillarboxes
