All this talk of endosperm applies only to Flowering Plants (Angiosperms), which have triploid endosperm. Gymnosperms, like pines, cycads, & junipers, do NOT have endosperm. In their seeds, the nutritive storage tissue is the female gametophyte, which is haploid. #seed #Pinaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Due to climate change, southern pine beetle is not very southern anymore.

The insect is now established as far north as Long Island, and this has implications for northeastern North American forests (and perhaps further). 🌲🌲

Serotiny is the storage of seeds in close cones or fruits, trapping the seeds & preventing dispersal until the cones are heated (usually by fire). Post-fire conditions are ideal for germinating seedlings. These are cones of Pinus clausa of the SE USA. #Pinaceae #serotiny #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
