Also, we're doing worse in terms of reading for pleasure vs other countries: "the most recent Progress in International Reading and Literacy Study (PIRLS) in 2021 found that just 29% of English pupils said they “very much like reading,” compared with the 42% international average."

This should be shouted regularly - English education is amongst the best in the world; it's one of the best performing countries in Europe.

As a proud owner of Canada - NEVER 51!

We are a sovereign nation and you have no right to even utter these words. We have lower taxes, free health & dental care, lower education fees, higher PIRLS and TIMSS scores, water, minerals, indigenous rights to their land, and we are kind.

The Welsh Government's Education Secretary Lynne Neagle has confirmed Wales will take part in the international primary reading and maths tests known as PIRLS and TIMSS.

Wales was set to be the only UK nation not taking part in the next round of the tests.

This is excellent! The one thing I’d question is the international measures on reading & Maths in PISA and PIRLS. So often quoted as indisputable evidence of higher standards, they are flawed measures. PISA itself has warned against relying on England’s results because of data collection anomalies.
I've written about Neets for the LRB. It is odd listening to recent debates about this completely ignore the overwhelming fact of this current crisis, that it is one of inactivity, disability, mental ill-health and neurodevelopmental disorders (as I discuss) www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

📚 England reversed educational declines & now ranks 4th in the world on PIRLS (reading) & highest-performing non-Asian country on TIMSS (math). Check out my interview with former Schools Minister Nick Gibb, who led the reforms 🎙️

Withdrawing from Data: Critics frequently point out that the Scottish Government pulled out of two major international surveys (TIMSS and PIRLS) that measure primary school math and science. To commentators, this looks like an attempt to hide declining standards.

Daisy also quotes England’s improving PIRLS rankings – under the Conservatives – but in absolute terms there was little movement: a move from 552 in 2011 to 559 in 2016, then 558 in 2021.
