To Robyn Chapman: Three biggest mistakes with pitches? Not having a good idea of what age group your book is written for. Also, not including comp titles, or bad comp titles. Your comp titles should be fairly recent and have good sales numbers. And generally, the author should have a similar platform as you. If you're a debut author, be cautious about only comping to famous bestsellers. From, Robyn Chapman.

Graphic with a curious looking kid asking: Dear Hollie Michaels, What are the three biggest mistakes with pitches? The answers: 1. Talking about theme and mood, but not what the project is about. 2. Using comps that are old or classics. 3. Illustrating only character designs and not showing sample pages.

Dear Robyn Chapman: What makes a pitch effective? The sample pages are key-- they're the part of the pitch I go to first. The storytelling, pacing, and dialogue need to be strong. The art needs to be a good fit for the age group, and a good fit for the publisher you're pitching to.

Dear Robyn Chapman: Why would editors attend a pitch event when agents are submitting queries to them already? A pitch event is a convenient way to discover new talent, and I don't have to worry about writing rejection letters. (Writing rejection letters is one of the worst parts of the job.) I can only skim a broad range of work and only reach out to the creators I'm interested in. And there's always a chance I'll discover the next big author, long before anyone else does. That's the dream! From Robyn Chapman.

Question: Dear Hollie Michaels: Are author and illustrator teams at a disadvantage because there are two instead of one? Answer: It's all subjective. If the illustrator's work is stronger than the author's, or vice versa. It would be awkward for me to reach out and say yes to one and no to the other, so it would be a pass. It's the same with a person who does both, one skill might be stronger than the other. So, I don't think it's any more of a disadvantage, especially if they are each working to their strengths. Question: Why do agents attend pitch events when people are already submitting to them? Answer: Like good storytelling, the stakes are high for a pitch event, so the pitches are stronger. An Author/illustrator really considers the work they are putting out there when they know industry folks and possibly other creators will see their work. My query box is filled with some gems, but many queries are not ready for an agent to see. Since no one but me is looking, the stakes are lower. The pitches are hit or miss. That's why, when going to a pitch event, you are bound to find something great! From Hollie Michaels

Have a book to pitch? Come visit the Louisville Book Festival on Saturday, October 24, 2026 and pitch to Keifer Ludwig of BookEnds Literary! Link in bio! Session spots are available now! Read more about him and the kinds of pitches he'll be ready to hear below. KEIFER LUDWIG Bio: Keifer Ludwig is a Literary Agent and Audio Manager at BookEnds and, most importantly, a fierce advocate for his authors. He first fell in love with book publishing at 18, when he interned at a literary agency. Since, he’s worked at multiple bookstores, Penguin Random House, and New Leaf Literary before finding his home at BookEnds. He believes in speaking truth to power and that books are one of the few things that can actually change how someone sees the world. He represents both commercial fiction and non-fiction. In both, he is passionate about finding underrepresented voices, high-concept hooks, and pacy stories that explore either darkness and/or love with humor and hope. In fiction, he acquires anything genre or genre-adjacent, namely Mystery/Thriller, Romance, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy. In non-fiction, he will look at anything written by an expert in one’s field or that conveys important scientific, political, historical, or social ideas with an accessible, storyteller-first voice. A native New Yorker and diehard Yankees/Nets fan, he is still finding ways to fall in love with the city he grew up in. He enjoys nerding out over Andor and Avatar the Last Airbender, stand-up comedy and board games, and the four most essential things in life: dogs, food, people, and books. Amen. Keifer acquires broadly across Adult, New Adult, and YA. In fiction, he is looking for anything genre or genre-adjacent, namely Mystery/Thriller, Science Fiction/Fantasy, and Romance. In nonfiction, he is looking for anything written by an expert in one’s field or that conveys important scientific, political, historical, or social ideas with an accessible, storyteller-first voice. Please note he only accepts memoir by referral. For More Information: https://www.bookendsliterary.com/submissions #louisvillebookfestival #literaryagentpitches

Have a book to pitch? Come visit the Louisville Book Festival on Saturday, October 24, 2026 and pitch to Eva Scalzo of Speilburg Literary! Link in bio! Session spots are available now! Read more about her and the kinds of pitches she'll be ready to hear below. EVA SCALZO Bio: A Leo Sun, Libra Moon, with a Scorpio rising, my chart describes me as a charismatic and powerful person who is also diplomatic and emotionally complex. I’ve been reading romance since the fifth grade when I discovered the Sweet Valley High series. My lifelong love of the genre meant that I inherited my beloved grandmother’s collection of vintage Harlequin Romances. I have a B.A. in the Humanities from the University of Puerto Rico and an M.A. in Publishing and Writing from Emerson College. Since graduating, my work in scholarly publishing allowed me to develop a keen sense of client and portfolio management, and my voracious and speedy reading keeps me aware of market trends. I am a member of the AALA and SCBWI. With the AALA, I serve on the AALA Board of Directors and am the Editor-in-Chief of the AALA Newsletter as well as the chair of the Social Media Subcommittee; I am also a member of the Communications Committee and People of Publishing Conference Special Committee. I’m looking for voice-driven YA and crossover romance and romantasy that balances heart, humor, and hope—stories where falling in love helps characters discover who they are. Think high-concept setups with emotional depth: the summer that changes everything, the cruise that goes hilariously off course, the fantasy quest that doubles as a love story, or the school play that blurs the line between acting and truth. I love lush, escapist settings—coastal towns, vibrant cities, magical kingdoms, faraway ships—and stories that make readers feel like they’re on an adventure while falling in love. My ideal submission has a strong romantic arc, sharp banter, and a joyful tone even when exploring grief or growth. Queer and diverse voices are always welcome, as well as stories featuring invisible chronic conditions; at my core, I want stories that celebrate love in all its forms. In Adult Fiction, I represent Romance (all subgenres but inspirational), Fantasy, and select Upmarket/Women’s Fiction and Mystery/Thriller. I also represent all subgenres of Young Adult Fiction and select Middle Grade Fiction (literary and fantasy). Accepting: Young Adult, New Adult, Adult commercial fiction - primary genres are romance, fantasy, mystery/thriller, light horror For More Information: https://www.evascalzo.com/mswl
