#Placeholders
Unless there is an exceptionally good reason for not doing it, art placeholders should always look like placeholders.

The goofier, the better. 😁

Hey! This is what placeholders actually look like!
We're so done with genAi that I tried to find the oldest and crustiest text-to-speech generator for our dialogue place-holders lol #indiedev

Embrace your shitty MS Paint skills and stop using AI for your placeholders.

Repeat after me- placeholders should be obviously placeholders
If they can be missed and left in by mistake, they aren't placeholders. Its the same reason you don't yoink other peoples' copyrighted work off the web as placeholders! But they knew. It was probably an exec's order to use it somewhere

Using gen ai for text and asset placeholders is not solving a problem; games have been made for decades with regular placeholders. studios using AI this way are just testing the water to see what more they can get away with - which will inevitably mean laying off skilled workers, to make worse games

People using shitty AI-generated art for their placeholders, meanwhile this has been our APC for quite a while now.

I should start collecting all the "oopsy woopsy we've 'accidentally' shipped with AI placeholders!" png posts.

This shit is exactly why placeholders are commonly pink/black checkerboxes with PLACEHOLDER in giant text on it so that shit doesn't get missed and go to fucking retail

Sandfall used genAI for placeholders that were in the game when it released, even if its ''just placeholders'' they STILL used AI.

The 2026 horror point-and-click adventure game Endacopia contains unused, seemingly deliberately clashing Mario pixel art assets (often jokingly called the "So Retro" art style) in its files. These were likely used as placeholders during development.

placeholders should be so bad you can't miss them or so adequate it wouldn't matter if they shipped. terrible or legally unusable assets which blend in are liability and sign of negligence

also these placeholders rule
you should make placeholder graphics look incredibly shitty!! making a game is a long and complicated process and if you use ai to make placeholders that look finished at a glance you'll probably forget some of it, and then people will scour your whole game and you'll look like a fraud.

And this is what a placeholder asset looks like.

You do not need AI to protoype anything in video games.

You do not need AI for placeholders in video games.

This is a flat lie.
