I think the difference is that over the centuries European placenames have acquired descriptors.
Nobody founded a town called Stratford-upon-Avon, the Avon was appended to clarify it wasn't any of the ones near London. And Stratford-atte-Bow eventually dropped the *original* name.

The Paris metro with random placenames for directions is a lot harder. Though they do tend to add key intermediate destinations now, which makes it a bit easier (TfL should do this).

The Fenno-Swedish placenames ending in |-lax| are funny to Swedes from Sweden. The ending has nothing to do with salmon, as it is a borrowing from Finnish "laksi" which is the original NOM Sing. of "lahti" 'bay, gulf' (the change laksi > lahti is a common textbook example of an analogical change).

...barley. It's in a lot of placenames. Berwick means barley farm. Later, bere came to specifically refer to bigg. It's the oldest grain crop cultivated in Britain, grown on 12 - 37 acres in Orkney. For context, that's the size of 2 my brother's fields. Some on Shetland..

No wait, "Felcester" is even funnier because if you follow the English way of pronouncing placenames like that (and going by the map those are clearly English-language names) then it's "Felcher".
