Plant swaps, cuttings from friends, divisions passed over the fence - informal plant sharing usually takes place without plant health checks.

Inspect the plant before you share it or accept it.

Aromia bungii - EU priority pest attacking cherry, plum and peach trees.

Signs: frass at the trunk base, round exit holes in bark.

Already present in Europe. September is the best time to spot it - after fruiting, before leaf fall.

Between 2023 and 2025, EFSA assessed 47 candidate priority pests for the EU.

That work is only useful if detection happens early enough to act on it.

If you spot something unusual, report it. Early warnings matter.

The emerald ash borer is a beetle whose larvae tunnel beneath the bark of ash trees, cutting off water and nutrients until the tree dies.

Have ash trees nearby? If you spot anything report it to your national plant protection organisation.

Plant Health starts with us: Simple actions that protect Ireland's food, environment and future
That is the message behind #PlantHealth4Life, the European Union campaign led by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission, with support in Ireland from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). Now in its fourth and final year, the campaign is encouraging people across Ireland to take simple actions that can help protect our plant health, food security and biodiversity. While plant health may sound like a specialist issue, it has a direct impact on everyday life. Healthy plants are essential for producing food, supporting rural communities and maintaining the landscapes and ecosystems that make Ireland unique. When pests and diseases spread, the consequences can be severe, affecting crop yields, increasing production costs and damaging natural habitats. A lesson from history Ireland has experienced first-hand the devastating impact of plant disease. The Irish Potato Famine of the mid-19th century, caused by Phytophthora infestans, more commonly known as Potato Late Blight (PLB), remains one of the starkest examples of how Irish plant health can affect our society, food supply and livelihoods. More recently, Europe has witnessed the destruction caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterial plant pathogen that has devastated olive groves in southern Europe. First detected...

Travellers warned against bringing plants into Cyprus
Travellers should avoid bringing plants, seeds and plant products into Cyprus, as they could introduce harmful pests and diseases that threaten the island’s environment and agriculture, the agriculture department warned on Monday. Even one plant or packet of seeds as a souvenir may carry insects, fungi, or bacteria not found in Cyprus, endangering crops, wildlife and the economy, it said. The warning coincides with Cyprus’s participation in the final year of the European #PlantHealth4Life campaign, led by the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), with the participation of 33 countries. The campaign aims to raise awareness regarding the importance of protecting plant health through responsible daily choices. The department said imported plants could harbour pests, such as the red palm weevil, which has already caused widespread damage to palm trees on the island. They may also carry pathogens that threaten olive trees, vineyards and citrus crops. Officials warned that the spread of such organisms could seriously harm the environment and economy, damaging ecosystems and farmers’ incomes. The department advised the public to seek guidance before transporting plants or seeds from abroad, avoid carrying uncertified plant products, inspect plants for disease or infestation, and report anything suspicious to...

#ClimateChange affects plant health, too 🌍

Warmer temperatures and extreme weather can weaken plants and help some pests spread more easily.

The more we notice these changes, the better we can protect our plants and ecosystems.
